Youssef El-Sherif is a Developmental Biology researcher working at the intersection of early mammalian embryogenesis, stem cell biology, and developmental epigenetics. He holds a BSc in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering from Misr University for Science and Technology (MUST).Youssef’s research interests center on a fundamental question in early development: understanding not only the “how” of cell fate and lineage specification, but, more importantly, the “why” behind the acquisition of distinct developmental identities. This has led him to investigate the causal role of epigenetic regulation in development, asking how epigenetic states regulate the timing and competence of developmental cell fate decisions.He is particularly interested in whether poised chromatin functions primarily as a mechanism for preserving developmental competence until the appropriate developmental time, rather than simply maintaining transcriptional repression.His research interests have led to active engagement with the international developmental and stem cell research community. His proposed experimental framework, Epigenetic Regulation of Early Embryogenesis: Using Human Embryo Models to Investigate Cellular Fate Decisions and Post-Implantation Development, was accepted for presentation at the Sy-Stem Symposium at the IMBA Vienna BioCenter. His abstract, Epigenetic Causality in Early Human Embryogenesis, was also accepted for presentation at Embryo 2026, the 2nd Meeting on Early Embryogenesis and Epigenetics, at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin. He presented his work on engineering synthetic molecular reporter systems for epigenetic regulation during early human development at the Stanford Molecular Imaging Mini-Fellowship.His engagement with the field has further included bursary-supported participation in the 2026 Loke Centre for Trophoblast Research Annual Meeting on Epigenetics of Embryogenesis and Placentation at the University of Cambridge, as well as a full bursary to attend the Loke CTR Placental Biology Course at the University of Cambridge.Alongside his research, Youssef works as a Genomics Lead at DataClin Group. He contributes to the scientific community as a Scientific Advisor for the Oncology Village at iGEM, Research Topic Coordinator for the iGEM Collection at Frontiers in Systems Biology, and Mentor in the iGEM Startups Biofounders Program. He also serves as a Reviewer for the Neuromatch Impact Scholars Program and has served as a judge for multiple international research competitions.
